tHE STORY SO FAR…

It started with a lockdown.

My Dad - who lives in Ripon - had to shield and isolate from the beginning of the first lockdown back in March 2020. The family live in various places around the country, away from him - and so we were concerned how he would cope at 86 years young! A young lady in Ripon, named Annette Kite, was delivering home cooked meals from her kitchen. Her mother is a friend of our family and so I got in touch.

I paid for the vegetables for her for the year, and still do from one of our suppliers in Ripon (K E Bland). Approximately 2 months ago she had a fall and could not supply the meals. Restaurants in Ripon stepped in, and O’Gradys sent meals down for one of the weeks.

O’Gradys staff felt a lot of pride in making this gesture and asked me the question “Why can’t we do this in Redcar?” The staff have planned, financed and delivered; and will continue over an initial 6 week period. The energy and ideas have been brilliant! They asked Redcar Facebook users to nominate people who they may be able to help in some small way. The results are here for all to see!

Our Restaurant became a Foodbank; and staff, friends, family, suppliers and customers all rallied round to help. Folk have made fantastic financial and food contributions, and O’Gradys thanks every single one of them for their kindness and generosity. Without them it would not have be possible. We have completed football blind cards, Easter Egg raffles and the like! Body Shop At Home area manager, Jade Green, has very kindly donated a star prize for a raffle, which is to be used at our up and coming COFFEE AND CAKE CHARITY CLOTHES SALE! (Look out online in the next couple of weeks for information and invites for this).

Donations landed in the form of money, taking turns on raffles etc, food donations, delivery assistance and voluntary work. From this, we started to receive baby clothes, toiletries, baby furniture and the like. Every single person who has contributed has done so ever so thoughtfully, and this has been hugely appreciated by all charities we have involved.

Special thanks to Robbie Kettlewell for his prize donations towards the hugely successful Easter Egg bonus balls, and to Juliette and Leonard Anderton who kindly donated a whopping 30 eggs for us to donate to children at our nominated charities (and to Donna and Peter for delivering these!).

Every single kind and considerate gesture has blown us away - and without these contributions, we would not have been able to proceed as we did!

Alderman BO Davies was the first Mayor of the Borough of Redcar, serving 2 terms of office in the 1920’s. He was also a very successful local business man. At the time of his death, he had no family, and after a few bequests his estate was put into a trust for the benefit of the residents of Redcar - primarily children. The Trustee’s are able to make donations using the income from this trust - all of which focus on local children.

Redcar Rotary Club have added to this funding phenomenally, with generous donations and also getting us in touch with The BO Davies Charitable Trust. An overwhelming donation of nappies, wipes and other baby items has landed on our doorstep from this trust - which is to be distributed accordingly on our next deliveries. Special thanks to them for such an impacting contribution!

The foodbank donations have supported “Footprints in the Community”, a local charity helping to alleviate poverty in Redcar. With the help of donations, we have so far been able to donate 240 individual food parcels, and the equivalent of around £250 in shelf stock contributions.

Whilst unable to open due to lockdown, hot meals were provided twice weekly, then weekly for the “Ladies of Steel” to distribute to the most vulnerable people in Dormanstown. We managed to provide them with a total of 800 meals.

The residents of the “Almshouses, Kirkleatham” have received fish and chip suppers and a St George’s Day pie and pea treat.

Donations have been made in the form of toiletries and baby items to “Link Charitable Trust” of Redcar, a mental health charity working to support vulnerable people; especially during this pandemic. Several customers and friends have gotten on board with this, and we owe special thanks to Julie and Bahera Abu-Shamat, Paul and Julie Irwin, Lauren Cassidy, Julie Shackleton and Sarah McKenzie for providing us with huge loads of baby clothes for the trust. We are supporting The Link further by providing them with a training room free of charge whenever required, and also 15 packed lunches every week for their Walk and Talk walking group. This, to date, is continuing.

Finally, we managed to touch base with “Foundation Redcar” and were pleased to be able to assist with donations of toiletries and baby goods, clothes and furnishings. Again, this is thanks to the BO Davies Charitable Trust, and donations from staff, customers, friends and families. We treat the clients of this charity to a take-away night, and we will aim to continue to make donations to suit their requirements around the business re-opening as and when we can. Big thankyou to Sarah McKenzie,, Lauren Cassidy and Kezia Scott for donations of baby clothes, toys and furniture! This will be a huge help to the Foundation charity and it’s users.
